Juneteenth is a day of great importance and the true end of slavery in the United States. In an effort to honor this day, Sinister is designating today’s blog to the flag behind the day. The White star represents Texas, the Lone Star State. It was in Galveston where on June 19, 1865, the remaining enslaved Americans learned of their freedom. The outline surrounding the star represents the “nova” meaning a new beginning for African Americans. The arch in the background is seen as a symbol of new horizons. This is meant to offer the opportunities and promise that lay ahead. This leaves only the colors chosen. The red, white and blue are a reminder that slaves and their descendants were and ARE American!
